When discussing design and the creative style of a house, flooring is often overlooked. Most people view flooring as the foundation for a space and look for a style and color that is muted or neutral, instead of viewing it as its own design element. Creating beautiful design moments with flooring is often a missed opportunity in a space, but can be implemented easily and often inexpensively. We are going to take a look at some design trends that allow your flooring to be a design focal point.
Herringbone/Chevron
A major trend in 2020 is Herringbone or chevron flooring. It is a twist on a classic floor and is the perfect way to tie in a classic feel with a modern flare. A chevron design is created by cutting the flooring at an angle to create one continuous zigzag design, while herringbone is created by laying the floor perpendicular to each other. These intricate patterns are a great way to tie in your design style to the rest of your space.

You can create a “rug” illusion utilizing both flooring and tile in your space. To create this style, you can either cut an insert into your existing floor or use a spacer when laying your flooring down. These look amazing in entry ways, bathrooms and hallways by creating space differentiation. These inserts are a great way to show creativity and style while maintaining neutral flooring throughout the rest of the space.

Fumed flooring is a great design element to use when wanting to stay classic, but wanting something that is a little more different than traditional wood. Fumed flooring gets its rich color and grain by being placed in a chamber with ammonia. The wood does not always react the same, creating different hues and intensity. This process allows for an incredibly rich color that will automatically draw your visitors’ eyes.
Porcelain Tiles
Utilizing porcelain tiles is a major trend happening this year! Although most people think about using tiles as backsplashes and as accents in the bathroom, there are so many more creative ways to use tiles throughout your space as flooring, accent walls, inset rugs and more! Choosing bright or patterned tiles is a great way to brighten up a space and infuse your own design style. Large pattered tiles in neutral colors are a great way to fuse Art Deco with modern style.
